Full course description
This course examines the challenges that refugees and immigrants face in adjusting to the American school system. Learning outcomes for teachers should influence their work in the schools, especially as it pertains to their immigrant and refugee students. The three main themes that will guide learning focus on 1) cultural collisions in the classroom due to immigration status; 2) cultural brokering for families and students as an advocate for learners; and 3) teaching English as a new language within the challenges of adjusting to trauma, social emotional growth, and the American school system.
